Joel Muñoz is the Superintendent of BakerRipley Community Schools, a charter network in Houston, Texas, dedicated to supporting students and families with comprehensive resources and services. Under his leadership, BakerRipley Community Schools have increased academic outcomes for students in Title 1 schools by implementing high-quality instruction, data-driven practices, holistic student support and the development of innovative educational programs.

With 19 years of experience in PK-12 education, Joel has held roles including assistant superintendent, head of schools, founding principal, assistant principal, dean of students, and middle school reading teacher in both traditional and charter schools such as IDEA Public Schools, Houston ISD, and YES Prep Public Schools. Throughout his career, Joel has led efforts to close achievement gaps, improve teacher and leader effectiveness, and expand opportunities for historically underserved students.

A first-generation college graduate, Joel was born to Mexican immigrant parents who instilled in him the values of hard work, perseverance, and the transformative power of education. Having experienced firsthand the challenges that many students from historically underserved communities face, he is deeply committed to ensuring that every child has equitable access to a high-quality education.

He serves on the board of Etoile Academy Charter School, is a Latinos for Education Alumni, and a recipient of the Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award. He holds a bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Houston and a master’s in educational leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University. In his free time, Joel enjoys rooting for the Houston Astros, Rockets and Texans, eating some good food and riding his bike.
