BIOGRAPHY

Travis Brown is executive director and principal of Pharos Academy Charter School, a K-12 institution in the Bronx serving students from New York City’s Community School District 12. Under Travis’s leadership, the school has achieved significant improvements in student performance, with math proficiency rates increasing from 16% to 81% and English language arts scores rising from 17% to 67%. His dedication to educational excellence has profoundly shaped the school’s culture and success.

Prior to joining Pharos Academy, Travis served as program director and instructional coach at Turnaround for Children, where he led strategic efforts to transform three schools in Newark, New Jersey. In this role, he provided leadership coaching and teacher development, resulting in improved school culture and student outcomes.

Earlier in his career, Travis founded a high school in Brooklyn designed to support at-risk, court-involved youth and established a technology-focused middle school in Harlem. His journey in education began as a high school mathematics teacher, where he developed his passion for innovative, student-centered learning.

In 2022, Travis earned a Doctorate of Education from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education, with a dissertation exploring high school teachers' beliefs and practices around disciplining students of color. He holds a master’s degree in math education from The City College of New York and a bachelor’s degree in computer information science from Temple University.

In addition to his educational leadership, Travis is the creator of Earners Academy, a financial literacy curriculum designed to empower students with the knowledge to navigate financial markets and build wealth, fostering economic empowerment in marginalized communities. His unwavering commitment to equity in education and financial literacy continues to inspire students, educators, and communities across New York City.
