BIOGRAPHY
William J. Collins is an accomplished nonprofit leader, visionary strategist, and advocate for equitable education. As the Chief External Affairs Officer at the Surge Institute, William has been instrumental in scaling the organization’s impact from two cities with fewer than 100 alumni to eight cities with over 400 change agents transforming education and leadership.
Recognized twice by Crain's Chicago Business as a top African American leader, William's career reflects a deep commitment to creating pathways for underserved communities. A former corporate executive turned classroom teacher turned social impact leader, he brings a unique blend of strategic acumen and grassroots understanding to his work. His leadership philosophy centers on authenticity, service, and building a lasting legacy.
William holds degrees from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and DePaul University, as well as an executive certificate from Georgetown University. He is a fellow of numerous prestigious programs, including Leadership Greater Chicago, the Obama Foundation Leaders USA program, Education Pioneers, and the Surge Fellowship. His service extends to board roles with Mikva Challenge, the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, New Life Covenant Church Southeast, and the Greenwood Oasis.
Serving as Surge’s chief evangelist, William embodies the power of compelling narratives to inspire action and support. His work focuses on fostering meaningful connections, sharing Surge’s mission, and raising critical resources to sustain and expand the organization’s robust slate of transformative programs.
William lives in the greater Chicago area with his wife, Alicia, and their shared passion for community service. A proud life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, William embodies the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and civic responsibility.
In his own words, "Nonprofit leadership is a family business—one that demands commitment, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the power of collective action to change the world."
